Across the water from the resort stands Hayk Istifanos, among the most consequential monasteries in Ethiopian memory. Its church traces to the Aksumite age; in the thirteenth century Saint Iyasus Mo'a raised it to a monastery, and from here came five figures the Ethiopian Orthodox Church remembers as its 'Lights.'
It schooled the saint Tekle Haymanot and the emperor Yekuno Amlak, who restored the Solomonic line. Its treasury keeps parchment manuscripts, holy articles and carved tablets entrusted by emperors across the centuries.
