A private boat onto Lake Hayk before first light, with mist still on the water and just-roasted coffee onboard. The lake sits two thousand metres above sea level; the sunrise here runs long and gold.
Provenance and passage
Lake craft
Hand-finished timber skiff · lakeside jetty
Departures at first light, weather permitting; the lake lies calmest before the morning breeze rises off the Wollo escarpment. Warm layers advised — the rest the lake decides.
There is an hour, before the town of Hayk stirs, when the lake lies perfectly still and the highlands seem to hold their breath. This is when we push off from the jetty.
A private vessel carries you out across water that sits more than two thousand metres above the sea, ringed by the Wollo escarpment and, on its far shore, the wooded peninsula of an ancient monastery. Mist lifts in sheets. The first light arrives gold, then white.
Coffee, freshly roasted, travels with you; so does the silence. You return as the resort wakes — and the day, by then, already feels like a gift you were let in on early.
